Air Bags give the best of both worlds, good ride height for getting around the burbs and that lower than low ...... low rider look when its parked up. Early cars and pickups need some smart chassis mods to take full advantage of an air bag suspension to get that lower than low look.  Cars from the mid 1960s onwards can get that low rider look just by fitting air bags with minimal mods.
   
If you want the car this low then you have to give somewhere for the drive line components to tuck up under the body. As a general rule of thumb a stock body and chassis does not have that space to tuck up the wheels and diff etc.  Your car becomes heavily modified to get the lower than low look.  To keep the car driving nice and maintain the cars strength and integrity, the modifications need to be carefully designed.
   
The air bags themselves have an optimum ride height. That is to say they have a position in their travel where they have enough air in them to support the car and not over pressursed so that they have flexibility to give a nice ride quality.  The cars that do not ride nice that I have travelled in usually have a couple of issues going on.  An air bag with very little air in it, becasue of its positioning with in the suspension, a shock absorber that is positioned so its full length of travel is not utilised [so its rendered ineffective], or there is so much air pressure in the bag just to hold the car up, it rides rock hard.

To modify a car to this level is not for the faint hearted, there is a level of time, money and commitment that exceeds what most guys consider reasonable, so be prepared if this is your dream.
 
Keep in mind there is a level of maintenance you add to the vehicle by fitting air bags, a poorly fitted air system can most likely give you problems, common examples are air lines coming loose or waring through, or burning though cables or air lines resting against the exhaust, air compressor not solidly mounted, the list can go on. A good install still leaves you with rubber air bags that will need replacing if you keep the car long enough, just like rubber tyres. I mention this just so you are aware, apart from that an air bagged car has everone looking at you when you rock into a cars and coffee event or a car show, it is the funnest thing to have the coolest looking car there.

Each car needs to be assed and given a price estimate. Engineering is an additional cost. A complete custom designed chassis could run between $35,000 to 75,000 depending on how much is involved. Then there is the body work required on top of this, plentry of cost ranges for body work elsewhere on this web site.

Where there are kits available for a particular later model car I am quite happy to fit fit them for you and do the minor mods needed to get it all to work. Generally speaking that could range from $5,500 to $15,000
