Classic car roof repair, old sun roofs removed, new metal formed and welded back in.
Lots of cars in the 1980s and 1990s had after market sun roofs fitted, it was the coolest thing back then, as a young bloke it was new and exciting. Now when we are looking at a classic car to do up, if it has a big hole in the roof it is not an attractive proposition to buy it in the first place. I remember that these old sun roofs used to let water in when they were new, so even if new rubbers and glass was available now, it wouldn't solve the problem.
Quite often the fittment of the sun roofs back in the day was very rough and in some cases the roof structural members were cut out, or cut into and now need to be reinstated to pass a roadworthy. I can form a new piece, prepair the butchered hole for welding and tig weld in the newly formed panel. I can repair or completely remake the structural members.
It is not the easiest job to do properly becasue the roof metal is thin, and the metal will be stressed from the original stamping process and will most likely be deformed becasue it now has a big hole in it. These stamping stresses in the metal cause it to move even more when welding it, so it takes some finese to get it done.
The interior of the car needs to be completely removed. There is grinding and welding involved and that can set fire to anything that remains in the car that is flammable. The grinding can also ruin any glass or plastic instrument panels, so the car needs to be prepared to work on it properly. Anything left inside the car cannot be guranteed not to be effected by the work. It is safer to remove everything.
